Molecular Classification of Epithelial Ovarian Tumors

Project Summary

The majority of ovarian cancers are carcinomas of the surface epithelial type, appearing on the cell layer that covers the ovary. Dr. Yiu will use cutting edge technology of laser capture microdissection (LCM) and high throughput cDNA microarray analysis, in which the expression of thousands of known and unknown genes in normal and malignant ovarian epithelial cells will be simultaneously compared. The gene expression profile generated from each tumor will also be used to correlate clinical data such as histopathology, chemo responsiveness, and prognosis. The study will provide predictors about the biological behavior of the tumor as to whether it is more likely to recur, progress to a more malignant type, or are resistant to routine chemotherapy.
