Steps Counselor

Kimberly Nelson, LCSW, is an Ovarian Cancer Counselor with OCRA’s Steps Program. Since 2003, Kimberly has served as an Oncology Social Worker at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, providing specialized counseling and complex case management to patients facing high-grade brain tumors, breast cancer, and head and neck cancers. Her clinical expertise also extends to specialized gynecologic oncology care; since 2019, she has partnered with Clearity Foundation and Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance to provide virtual, short-term counseling to women at various stages of the ovarian cancer experience. 

Beyond her direct clinical practice, Kimberly is a recognized leader, researcher, and program innovator. She designed and launched a successful outpatient oncology social work program at a major cancer center and has developed vital psychoeducational programs and support groups for lung transplant, breast cancer, and neuro-oncology patients. Driven by a commitment to holistic care, Kimberly was awarded a major grant to research and implement spiritual screening protocols in a neuro-oncology clinic, presenting her findings at the International Neuropalliative Care Society. 

Her contributions to the field have been published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Annals of Hematology and Advances in Radiation Oncology. Kimberly’s dedication to professional excellence earned her the 2023 Exemplary Leadership in Oncology Social Work Award from the American Cancer Society, and she was honored as a Mayo Clinic Social Worker of the Year Nominee in 2025

Kimberly is a Certified Oncology Social Worker (OSW-C) and holds clinical licensure in California, Florida, and Georgia, where she provides specialized ovarian cancer counseling through OCRA’s Steps program.
