Matthew Trunnell

Matthew Trunnell is Principal Architect for the OCRA Research Exchange, a data-sharing and collaboration platform of Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance built to accelerate research into ovarian and other gynecologic cancers.

For more than 25 years, Matthew has worked at the intersection of biomedical research, information technology, and data science, holding leadership roles at numerous research and healthcare organizations, including the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, where he served as the Director of Research Computing and Chief Information Officer, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, where he served as Chief Information Officer and Vice President until 2020. He has built secure, scalable platforms for managing and analyzing complex biomedical data, and led initiatives spanning genomics, clinical informatics, cloud computing, research data infrastructure, and artificial intelligence.

Matthew is formally trained as an oceanographer; he spent a number of years developing computational models of ocean circulation—and moonlighting as a freon chemist so he could spend time at sea—before finding his way into the bioinformatics field at the tail end of the Human Genome Project.

At OCRA, Matthew is building the Research Exchange into a trusted ecosystem connecting researchers, clinicians, patients, and advocates, and expanding access to shared data and computational tools. His work is grounded in the belief that well-designed technology and open research and collaboration can speed discovery and improve outcomes for everyone affected by gynecologic cancers.
