OCRF Research Pinpoints Two Genes that Trigger Ovarian Cancer

(January 28, 2015) OCRF grantee Ron Chandler, PhD developed a mouse model of clear cell ovarian cancer and found a potential route to better treatments and much-needed diagnostic screens.

Dr. Chandler spearheaded a team of researchers at University of North Carolina that developed a mouse model of clear cell ovarian cancer that accurately portrays the disease as it occurs in humans. The model has helped them identify two mutated genes– ARID1A and PIK3CA– whose interaction appears to trigger, then hasten, the development of the cancer.

This work, which was published this week in Nature Communications, was funded in part by a 2013 OCRF Ann Schreiber Mentored Investigator Award to Dr. Chandler.
