Zack Irby and Susan Bahorich

“It’s my hope that my support of OCRA will encourage others to create their own way of giving back.”

Fundraising for OCRA is a great way to make an impact this September. Get inspired by Zack Irby, an OCRA Hero turning passion into purpose. A former broadcast journalist, he now runs his own bakery called Frosted by Zack, and has found new purpose in honoring a beloved friend and colleague lost to ovarian cancer.

“Susan Bahorich and I worked together at WDBJ7, the CBS affiliate in Roanoke, Virginia,” Zack explains. “She fought ovarian cancer for more than a decade and went public with her cancer journey on-air and on social media. She lost her fight on July 8, 2022 just three days shy of her 47th birthday.”

“Susan was my first anchor that I worked one-on-one with as a producer, and she brought so much joy to our weekend newscasts. She was a complete ray of sunshine. She was one-of-a-kind and a true storyteller. ”

Inspired by Susan’s sunny personality — and her love for Toll House- cookies — Zack created “Susan’s Sunshine Cookies,” a gourmet cookie with a teal drizzle and a sunflower decoration that quickly became a symbol of hope and a powerful fundraising tool.

Susan’s Sunshine Cookies

What started as a local effort quickly expanded. “I initially thought I would sell a dozen or so cookies,” Zack says. “I never imagined it would go viral. I ended up selling close to 400 cookies and shipping to six states.”

To anyone considering their own fundraising campaign for OCRA, Zack has a message: “Just go for it. Being able to make a difference in the lives of so many people makes it all worth it.” Whether you’re baking and selling cookies, organizing an event, or finding another way to raise funds, your efforts can bring hope and resources to those affected by ovarian cancer.
